Olfactory Therapy

Olfactory System

olfaction is the only sensory modality that is directly connected into the cerebral hemisphere affecting mood, emotions, behavior, memory, motivation and survival

olfactory receptors are the only neurons that are inserted into the surface epithelium of the body and are, therefore, directly exposed to the environment

Olfactory Therapy

definition: using the sense of smell for restorative benefit

What conditions benefit?

  1. Dementia | Alzheimer’s

  2. ADHD

  3. Autism

  4. Addiction recovery

  5. Poor sense of smell

  6. Sensory Processing Disorder

  7. Psychiatric disorders

  8. All things mental health

  9. Glioblastomas | Brain tumors

  10. Mood & Sleep disorders

  11. Movement disorders i.e. Parkinson’s

.

Olfactory neurons have the ability to regenerate, which is rare within the nervous system. New neurons in the nasal cavity must project axons to the olfactory bulb within the brain itself. Olfactory Ensheathing Cells surround the growing axons, assisting in their regeneration and also engulfing debris from dead and damaged cells. The ability of OECs to promote neural regeneration has led to studies of their potential in the treatment of spinal cord injuries and the neurodegenerative disorder amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
